Continuing Professional Development

CPD concentrates on the continuing learning needs of established GPs, whether full time or part-time as partners or employed doctors working regular sessions or as locums.

The responsibility for the organisation of CPD and the annual appraisal for everyone working in the NHS now rests with Primary Care Trusts. The Deanery no longer has a direct role in the supervision of learning activities for CPD but remains keen to work with PCTs in this area.

Trainer CPD grant

The Department of Health has agreed to continue the payment of £750 as a grant for trainer development first made available in 2005/6. The Strategic Health Authority has tended to delay passing on the funding and we only recently received the funds to make payments for 2007/8. We hope that the funding for the 2008/9 will be made available soon. When it is, we will amend this page accordingly.

The payment recognises that, as a trainer, you need to keep up to date and that your continuing professional development as a trainer forms part of your personal development plan. So, if you have been an approved trainer between 1/4/07 and 31/3/08, you are entitled to claim the 2007/8 payment. You do not have to have had a trainee in post during 2007/8 providing you have had a trainee in post within the past three years. You also need to supply evidence of educational activity relevant to your work as a trainer.

Please download the invoice and return it to me at my usual address, as on the invoice, together with some outline information about the professional development activities related to training that you undertook in 2007/08 and your objectives for 2008/09.

Once I receive the completed invoice, I shall be able to authorise payment and should be able to send you a cheque promptly.
